How to Pick a First Dance Song

Music

Music is the first thing that you have to pick for your first dance. Or for any wedding dance for that matter. It's what we as choreographers will create to, and it's what you and your loved one(s) will move to.

First Dance Songs

When picking your first dance song, you want to pick something that reflects you as a couple, and that you both like. Maybe your partner loves Dylan, or The Beatles, and you love Gaga and Beyonce. Brain storm some ideas together and make a list of songs that you both like. Take that list and youtube different covers of that song. You may be surprised that while your favourite artist may not be Dylan, there is a unique cover of a Dylan song sung by Adele that you can both agree would be a good balance for your wedding day. Try to combine your interests, a slow version of a rocksong, or a mash up of an Ed Sheran song...you get the picture

Father Daughter Songs

This may be the easiest thing to choose or the hardest. You've either known your whole life what song you want you and your father to dance to on your wedding day, or you have no idea. If you have no idea, do the same thing as you did with your partner. Think up some artists that your dad and you like. Maybe there is a singer that you both love and look up some songs by them. The song doesn't have to be about a father and daughter, it can just be a song about a great relationship, or love. I always encourage something fun in this category, surprise your guests with some pop song that you have a choreographed dance to. This way you turn your father-daughter dance in to something incredibly memorable.

Wedding Party Dance Song

It's time to get wild. This is where I always suggest to pick a bunch of songs that we edit together. Choose stuff that you know everyone in your group will love, and that is bound to get the guests up on their feet. Some oldies and some top forties will be sure to have everyone grooving.
